Daily Agri Updates – October 02, 2026 | GrowinAgri Daily

By GrowinAgri / October 2, 2026

This edition highlights key developments shaping agriculture across technology, investment, policy and farm markets.

From Crystal Crop’s FMC India acquisition and Tessenderlo’s $403 million investment in FMC to advances in agricultural robotics, biochar, disease surveillance and seed breeding, innovation continues to reshape the sector.

Expana’s AI platform and strong tractor sales from Sonalika and Mahindra further reflect the growing role of technology and mechanisation.

Meanwhile, India’s higher Rabi MSPs and ₹5,547.99 crore procurement approval underline continued policy support for farmers and crop diversification.

CCI Approves Crystal Crop Protection’s Acquisition of FMC India

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved Crystal Crop Protection Ltd’s acquisition of 100% shareholding in FMC India Private Limited.

The transaction will see Crystal Crop acquire FMC India from FMC Netherlands Holdings II B.V. and its affiliates on a fully diluted basis. Crystal Crop, established in 1994, develops, manufactures and distributes crop protection products, seeds and agricultural equipment across India.

Its portfolio includes herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, seed treatment and plant health and nutrition products.

FMC India, established in 2000, operates in the manufacturing and marketing of crop protection products, including insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and seed treatment solutions.

The CCI approval clears the regulatory requirement for the proposed acquisition and marks a notable transaction in India’s crop protection industry.

The deal brings the operations of FMC India under Crystal Crop as the Indian agribusiness expands its presence across the crop protection value chain.

NDSU Row-Crop Robot Achieves 96.5% Weeding Accuracy in Sugar Beet Trials

Engineers at North Dakota State University have developed and field-tested an autonomous mechanical weeding robot that achieved 96.5% weeding efficacy in sugar beet trials.

The system combines an Amiga robotic platform with a three-row cultivator featuring independently controlled sweep blades for precise, site-specific weed removal. Using RTK-GPS, strain gauge load cells and laser distance sensors, the robot can adjust blade positioning and depth based on field conditions.

Trials showed that the system could achieve 50% weed coverage while reducing overall soil disturbance by 48.7% compared with less targeted cultivation. The robot maintained an average tillage depth close to the 30-millimetre target, demonstrating precise mechanical control.

However, its current operating speed of about 0.5 metres per second remains a major limitation for large-scale commercial deployment.

Researchers see faster actuators, improved positioning updates and multiple robots working in parallel as key steps toward commercial-scale autonomous mechanical weeding.

Cotierra Raises $3 Million to Scale Decentralised Biochar Across Tropical Agriculture

Zurich-based climate technology company Cotierra has raised $3 million to expand its decentralised biochar technology from field deployments to commercial scale.

The latest funding brings the company’s total capital raised since founding to $4.75 million. Cotierra converts agricultural residues into biochar close to where they are generated, helping reduce waste, improve soil resilience and lower supply-chain emissions.

Its solution combines decentralised biochar reactors with a digital platform for operating, monitoring and verifying production and outcomes. The company initially demonstrated its model in the coffee value chain and is now expanding into other tropical crops including cocoa, cotton and citrus.

The funding round was led by PINC and Carbon Removal Partners, with participation from several climate and impact-focused investors.

Cotierra aims to make decentralised biochar a scalable solution for improving farmer productivity and resilience while supporting carbon removal across tropical agricultural supply chains.

DARO Raises $2.5 Million to Scale Disease Surveillance Across U.S. Swine Industry

Nebraska-based biotechnology company DARO has raised $2.5 million to expand its whole-herd disease surveillance platform for the U.S. swine industry.

The funding round was led by Grit Road Partners, with Invest Nebraska and Nelnet serving as co-leads, and brings additional backing from pork producers and agricultural investors.

DARO’s non-invasive molecular surveillance technology is designed to detect pathogen signals across entire herds without relying solely on samples from individual animals.

The company initially focused on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), one of the major disease challenges for U.S. pork producers, and has expanded its capabilities to other pathogens including PEDV and African swine fever virus.

In commercial nursery studies, DARO detected PRRSV an average of 3.91 days earlier than oral fluid surveillance and was the first method to detect the virus in all 11 rooms evaluated.

The new capital will support laboratory expansion, automation, molecular and genomic capabilities, data infrastructure and wider commercial deployment.

DARO aims to provide producers and veterinary teams with earlier, more representative disease intelligence to strengthen herd health management.

FMC Corporation and Tessenderlo Group Complete $403 Million Minority Investment

FMC Corporation has completed a minority equity investment from Belgium-based Tessenderlo Group, with Tessenderlo acquiring approximately 20% of FMC’s outstanding shares for about $403 million.

The transaction, completed on September 23, follows the definitive agreement signed by the companies in June 2026 and the completion of required regulatory approvals.

Tessenderlo purchased 30,319,166 FMC common shares at $13.30 per share and has the right to nominate one independent director to FMC’s board.

The company has nominated Tessenderlo CEO Luc Tack for the position, while accepting customary standstill restrictions and a three-year lock-up period.

FMC plans to use the proceeds primarily to repay debt, supporting its target of approximately $1 billion in debt reduction. The investment also closes FMC’s strategic options review launched in February 2026, with the company continuing as an independent business.

FMC said it will focus on strengthening its R&D pipeline and accelerating the commercialization of new crop protection innovations.

China Opens National Seed Laboratory in Jiamusi to Accelerate Cold-Region Crop Breeding

China has launched a new national laboratory in Jiamusi focused on accelerating crop breeding and improving the use of germplasm resources across Northeast China.

The Key Laboratory of Northeast Germplasm Resources Innovation and Biological Breeding aims to bring together around 100 breeding experts to shorten the development and approval cycles for rice, corn and soybean varieties.

Over the next five years, the laboratory plans to screen 50 germplasm materials with traits such as high yield, quality and disease resistance while creating 10 new germplasm resources.

The initiative is designed to convert underused genetic resources into commercially useful crop varieties suited to the region’s cold climate and large-scale farming systems. Jiamusi provides a strong base, with 1.27 million hectares sown to major crops in 2026 and a network of 97 seed enterprises.

The city’s breeding ecosystem has already developed 1,157 crop varieties, providing expertise and resources for the new platform.

The laboratory reflects China’s broader focus on seed innovation as a tool to strengthen agricultural productivity, climate adaptation and food security.

Expana Launches Expana IQ Connect to Bring Agrifood Intelligence into Enterprise AI

Expana has launched Expana IQ Connect, an enterprise-grade Model Context Protocol (MCP) server designed to connect AI platforms with trusted agrifood commodity intelligence.

The system enables AI tools including Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini to access Expana’s benchmark prices, forecasts, market news and expert insights. The company is targeting procurement teams, commodity buyers and supply-chain executives that rely on market data for sourcing, negotiations and cost forecasting.

Expana says its benchmark prices include published sourcing and methodology, providing greater traceability and auditability for AI-generated insights. The platform is designed to bring structured commodity intelligence directly into existing enterprise AI workflows rather than requiring users to switch between separate systems.

Expana is also developing IQ Agents, with its first cost model agent already live and additional specialised agents planned. The launch highlights the growing integration of AI with verified agrifood market data for procurement and commodity decision-making.

Sonalika Tractors Crosses 100,000 Sales in Six Months, Sets New Record

Sonalika Tractors has crossed sales of 100,000 tractors in just six months between April and September 2026, marking one of its fastest sales performances to date. The company said the milestone was achieved in its 30th year, compared with the roughly one year it took to reach the same annual sales level about eight years ago.

Sonalika attributed the growth to continuous product improvements, better understanding of farmer requirements, production planning and a strengthened dealer network. To prepare for higher festive-season demand, the company’s Hoshiarpur plant produced a record 19,000 tractors in September, its highest monthly production to date.

The company has also expanded its dealer network to improve tractor availability and supply to farmers. Sonalika said the six-month milestone reflects collaboration among its employees, dealer partners and farmers.

With festive demand expected to support the tractor market, the company is now focused on sustaining sales and setting new performance targets.

Mahindra Sells 50,208 Tractors in India in September 2026; Exports Surge 62%

Mahindra & Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Business sold 50,208 tractors in the Indian market in September 2026, marking a 23% year-on-year decline from 64,946 units in September 2025.

The company attributed the decline mainly to a shift in the festive season, which begins in October this year, along with a higher comparison base from September 2025. Despite weaker domestic sales, tractor exports increased 62% year-on-year to 1,892 units during the month. Including exports, Mahindra’s total tractor sales stood at 52,100 units, down 21% from 66,111 units a year earlier.

However, cumulative domestic sales through September reached 262,872 units, up 6% year-on-year. Total cumulative sales, including exports, rose 7% to 274,068 units, while exports increased 16% to 11,196 units.

The September performance highlights a mixed trend, with short-term domestic sales affected by seasonal factors while cumulative sales and exports continued to grow.

India Raises MSP for All Six Rabi Crops for Marketing Season 2027-28

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved higher Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all six mandated Rabi crops for Marketing Season 2027-28.

Safflower received the highest increase at ₹675 per quintal, followed by rapeseed and mustard at ₹413 and lentil at ₹390 per quintal. Wheat MSP has been raised by ₹25 to ₹2,610 per quintal, while barley and gram MSPs will increase to ₹2,286 and ₹5,958, respectively.

The approved MSPs provide an estimated margin of 50% to 106% over the All-India weighted average cost of production. The government said the increases are aimed at supporting farmer returns while encouraging crop diversification toward pulses and oilseeds.

The decision also follows the policy of fixing MSP at least 1.5 times the weighted average cost of production. The government highlighted rising procurement and MSP payments for Rabi crops over the past decade as part of its agricultural support measures.

India Approves ₹5,547.99 Crore Procurement of Pulses and Oilseeds for Kharif 2026-27

The Government of India has approved ₹5,547.99 crore worth of procurement of pulses and oilseeds at Minimum Support Price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for Kharif Marketing Season 2026-27.

The procurement will cover Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, with tur, moong, soybean and sunflower among the key crops. Uttar Pradesh has received the largest allocation of ₹3,992.57 crore, including procurement of 4.66 lakh tonnes of tur and 6,250 tonnes of moong.

Karnataka has been allocated ₹1,107 crore for soybean, moong and sunflower procurement, while Telangana has received ₹448.42 crore for soybean and moong. The move is aimed at supporting farmers if market prices fall below MSP and strengthening price stability for key crops.

The government also linked the initiative to increasing domestic production and self-reliance in pulses and edible oils. Procurement at designated centres is expected to be carried out transparently, with payments transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts.
