Simplot’s Gene-Edited Strawberry Lines Clear Key UK Precision Breeding Regulatory Step
J.R. Simplot Company has achieved a major regulatory milestone in England, where eight of its gene-edited strawberry lines have been confirmed as “precision bred organisms” by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
Developed using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, the strawberry plants feature edits to the Terminal Flower 1 (Tfl1) gene, which effectively removes the genetic brake on flowering to confer remontancy—enabling continuous fruiting across an extended growing season.
Because the edits involved precise native modifications and left no foreign DNA or Cas9 machinery behind, the lines qualify under England’s Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Regulations 2025 rather than restrictive transgenic GMO frameworks. Simplot confirmed that the targeted changes remained stable over three vegetative generations without unintended off-target disruptions, verified using PCR and nanopore sequencing.
The milestone clears the path for planned field selection trials and sensory taste testing across England to ensure fruit quality and flavour remain uncompromised. Subject to concluding the registration process and clearing the UK Food Standards Agency’s safety review, commercial distribution is targeted across England, Wales, and Scotland.
USDA Launches $180 Million Seed Sovereignty Initiative to Sequence National Plant Germplasm Collections
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has unveiled a $180 million Seed Sovereignty Initiative to characterize and sequence America’s domestic agricultural genetic resources, bolstering national crop resilience and security.
Directed toward the Agricultural Research Service’s National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS)—which maintains more than 600,000 accessions spanning over 16,000 species—the two-year program transitions the repository from passive conservation into active, strategic breeding deployment.
By integrating modern genomic sequencing and artificial intelligence, researchers aim to identify critical agronomic traits and accelerate responses to emerging pest and climate pressures. The initiative addresses strategic vulnerabilities, countering foreign competitors that have actively collected and sequenced global germplasm while U.S. assets remained largely uncharacterized.
In tandem with the scientific program, USDA is expanding its Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Justice to monitor competition and transparency across commercial seed markets. This coordinated push ensures American producers maintain equitable access to innovative, highly productive seed choices while protecting sovereign agricultural supply chains.
China Approves Country’s First Nuclear Male Sterility Corn Transformation Event for Seed Production
China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has officially issued an agricultural GMO safety certificate for SSMM-15, marking the nation’s first approved nuclear male sterility transformation event for commercial corn seed production.
Jointly developed by China Agricultural University and Sichuan Tianneng Jingxiu Biotechnology Co., Ltd., the breakthrough heterosis-improved maize line introduces an intelligent nuclear male sterility system that completely eliminates the necessity for manual detasseling.
By transitioning seed operations from costly, labor-intensive manual methods to automated mechanical processes, the technology substantially lowers production overhead, prevents seed purity fluctuations, and minimizes human operational risks.
In commercial seed production trials conducted in Zhangye City alongside agricultural authorities and research institutions, sterile lines demonstrated marked yield advantages over traditional manual detasseling—achieving higher rows per ear, increased kernels per row, and a yield boost exceeding 15% per unit area.
This regulatory milestone transitions the system from experimental laboratory breeding toward commercial-scale industrialization. The National Key Laboratory of Corn Biological Breeding at China Agricultural University will leverage this approval to further refine intelligent sterility seed systems and accelerate nationwide agricultural deployment.
