In this edition, Brazil’s cotton crop protection market reaches a record R$8.2 billion, while researchers develop MOF-based smart fertilizers to restore degraded soils and improve nutrient management.

In China, novel nanoparticles aim to improve pesticide retention, alongside new efforts to breed stress-tolerant corn for challenging growing conditions. Meanwhile, physical AI is advancing across forestry operations in the United States.

In India, Agrograde introduces AI-powered arecanut sorting, organic Palmyra jaggery powder enters the Bulgarian market, and Dhanuka Agritech launches a new herbicide for maize and sugarcane. The country’s ethanol supplies have also reached 987 crore litres, with grain-based feedstocks contributing over 71% of total receipts.

Together, these developments reflect emerging opportunities in agricultural biotechnology, automation, sustainable inputs, international trade and bio-based energy.

Here is what you need to know today.

Brazil’s Cotton Crop Protection Market Hits Record R$8.2 Billion in 2025-26

Brazil’s cotton crop protection market reached a record R$8.217 billion (US$1.478 billion) in the 2025-26 season, marking a 14% increase in local currency compared with the previous year. According to Kynetec’s FarmTrak Cotton survey, spending rose due to more frequent pesticide applications and higher treatment costs.

The average number of treatments increased 13% to 107 per season, while the average cost per treatment climbed 21% to R$4,209. Insecticides dominated the market, accounting for 50% of total spending, followed by fungicides at 24% and herbicides at 14%. Fungicides recorded the fastest proportional growth, increasing 19% to R$1.98 billion.

Meanwhile, boll weevil and caterpillar management remained major cost drivers for cotton growers. The survey covered 97% of Brazil’s cotton-growing area and highlighted an 8% decline in cotton planting area in Mato Grosso, despite rising crop protection expenditure.

Brazil Develops Smart MOF-Based Fertilizer to Restore Degraded Soils

Researchers at the University of São Paulo and partner institutions in Brazil have developed a patented smart fertilizer using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to regenerate degraded soils, improve crop productivity and reduce agricultural emissions.

The technology has been tested in sugarcane, soybean and coffee crops, with trials indicating increased productivity, greater soil carbon storage and lower CO₂ emissions. Designed to control nutrient retention and release according to soil conditions, the material could help restore around 150 million hectares of degraded land in Brazil.

The research team also reports an approximately 70% reduction in production costs compared with conventional manufacturing methods. The innovation could reduce dependence on imported fertilizers, support regenerative agriculture and create opportunities for carbon credits.

The technology is currently advancing from kilogram-scale validation toward industrial production. Its wider adoption will depend on successful scale-up, commercial viability and confirmation of its benefits under large-scale farming conditions.

Chinese Scientists Develop Nanoparticles to Improve Pesticide Efficiency

Researchers at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have developed innovative silica nanoparticles designed to help pesticides adhere more effectively to crop leaves. Inspired by the tiny hair-like structures, known as pili, that allow bacteria to attach to surfaces, the nanoparticles feature rough, spike-covered surfaces that grip leaves and resist washing away.

The technology also enables controlled pesticide release and improved protection against ultraviolet degradation. In tests on cotton, soybean and tomato leaves, the formulation retained more than 4.8 times as much pesticide after simulated rainfall compared with a commercial imidacloprid product. The innovation could reduce pesticide wastage, lower application frequency and help farmers cut input costs.

Initial safety tests on plants and zebrafish showed no clear signs of harm. However, further research and field validation will be needed to establish its long-term environmental safety, effectiveness and commercial potential.

Origin Agritech Launches Stress-Tolerant Corn Breeding Project in Southwest China

Chinese agricultural technology company Origin Agritech has launched a stress-tolerant corn breeding project through its subsidiary, Guizhou Origin Biotechnology, with support from Guizhou provincial authorities. The three-year initiative, running from September 2026 to August 2029, aims to develop high-yielding corn varieties adapted to the mountainous growing conditions of Southwest China.

Guizhou Origin has been approved for RMB 1.098 million (approximately US$152,000) in government science and technology funding, subject to final administrative procedures. The broader project has a total budget of RMB 24.32 million and involves Guizhou Modern Seed Industry Group, China Agricultural University and other research partners.

The research will focus on elite germplasm screening, biotechnology-assisted breeding, hybrid selection and large-scale doubled haploid line production. Project-wide targets include promoting new corn varieties across 200,000 hectares, increasing yields by at least 10% in demonstration zones and reducing pesticide and fertilizer use by 15%.

The initiative is expected to strengthen climate-resilient corn production and accelerate the commercialization of improved varieties by 2029.

Kodama Secures $7M to Scale Remote AI Logging Operations

Kodama Systems has secured a $7 million seed round—bringing its total funding to $14 million—to scale its physical AI platform across the US timber sector. The California-based startup tackles severe forestry labor shortages by retrofitting heavy logging skidders with NVIDIA compute, eight cameras, dual LiDAR, and Starlink.

This system combines supervised autonomy with remote teleoperation, enabling operators to run grueling machinery safely from their homes without sacrificing manual output. Already deployed across the Southeast, Kodama has moved over 100,000 tons of timber in six months using a flexible robotics-as-a-service model.

The business eliminates transit costs, improves daily workforce reliability, and prepares to expand operations into 20-hour shifts including nighttime logging. In addition to vehicle automation, the platform captures valuable under-canopy LiDAR mapping data to help landowners track timber inventory and forest density.

With OEM integrations already in place, the company is now working toward allowing single remote operators to manage multiple machines simultaneously.

Agrograde Launches AI-Powered Optical Sorting Technology for Arecanut Industry

Indian physical AI startup Agrograde has introduced an autonomous AI-powered optical sorting system specifically designed for the arecanut industry, with its first commercial installation at Vikas Traders in Mangalore, Karnataka. The system can process approximately one tonne of arecanut per hour, enabling the facility to handle nearly eight tonnes daily.

Using computer vision and proprietary AI models, the technology captures 10–12 images of each nut to identify visible defects and automatically separate rejected produce from accepted material. Sorting accuracy has improved from approximately 75% during initial commissioning to 89% as the AI models have been updated using commercial operating data.

The system also generates quality reports covering size distribution, defects and packing quantities, helping businesses improve quality monitoring and operational efficiency. Developed in collaboration with Vikas Traders, the technology aims to reduce dependence on manual sorting and skilled labour.

The innovation highlights the growing role of Indian AI and robotics startups in automating agricultural processing and strengthening post-harvest operations.

India’s Organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder Enters Bulgarian Market

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the maiden export of 1.755 metric tonnes of NPOP- and EU-certified organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder from Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district to Varna, Bulgaria.

Manufactured by Wellbeing Foods in collaboration with Chetty Exports, the consignment marks a step towards expanding India’s traditional palm-based products in international markets. The shipment will be transported by sea through Chennai Port, with Bulgaria-based Sow Life Ltd serving as the importer and distributor.

The initiative covers 137 acres under organic cultivation and aims to improve market access and export opportunities for participating farmers. Reported price realisation is approximately 15–22% higher for farmers and 17% higher for the manufacturer compared with the domestic market.

Derived from Palmyra blossom nectar, the traditional sweetener offers opportunities for product diversification and value addition. The export is expected to strengthen India’s organic agricultural exports while supporting Tamil Nadu’s Palmyra-based farming and processing value chain.

Dhanuka Agritech Launches Tembotrax Herbicide for Maize and Sugarcane

Leading Indian agri-input company Dhanuka Agritech Ltd. has officially launched Tembotrax, a specialized early post-emergence herbicide designed for weed control in maize and sugarcane crops across major agricultural regions in India.

Formulated with Tembotrione 34.4% SC, the systemic HPPD-inhibitor works by blocking carotenoid biosynthesis, which triggers rapid bleaching and decay in susceptible weeds while ensuring high crop selectivity when applied as recommended.

The new solution delivers effective broad-spectrum control against both challenging narrow-leaf and broadleaf weed varieties through a single, targeted spray application. According to Managing Director Rahul Dhanuka, early-stage weed competition presents a severe threat to crop establishment, vegetative growth, and overall farmer profitability.

By suppressing aggressive weed flushes during the most critical early growth stages, Tembotrax helps growers minimize field management hurdles and safeguard yield potential throughout the crop cycle.

India’s Ethanol Supplies Reach 987 Crore Litres, with Grain-Based Feedstocks Contributing 71.4%

India’s cumulative ethanol receipts reached 987 crore litres by the end of September 2026 under Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025–26, achieving 82.5% of the total contracted allocation of 1,197 crore litres, according to the All-India Distillers’ Association (AIDA). Grain-based feedstocks contributed 705 crore litres, accounting for 71.4% of total supplies.

Maize emerged as the leading feedstock, supplying 413 crore litres, followed by surplus FCI rice at 222 crore litres and damaged food grains at 70 crore litres. Sugar-based feedstocks contributed the remaining 282 crore litres, achieving a supply fulfilment rate of 97.6%. The figures highlight maize’s growing importance in India’s ethanol production and the expanding role of agricultural commodities in the biofuel value chain.

AIDA emphasised that a diversified feedstock network is crucial for strengthening energy security and sustaining investment. Future opportunities in flex-fuel vehicles, sustainable aviation fuel and compressed biogas could further expand demand for agricultural feedstocks and support farmer-linked value chains.
