Let’s start…

CSIRO Develops Climate-Resilient ‘Hurdle’ Dual-Purpose Wheat to Protect Australian Growers Against Frost and Heat Losses

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has unveiled Hurdle, a high-yielding, dual-purpose wheat variety engineered to safeguard growers from severe climate disruptions such as flowering frosts and late-season heat waves.

Led by Chief Research Scientist Dr. Greg Rebetzke, the decade-long breeding initiative originated after severe spring frosts devastated grain crops in Western Australia’s Lake Grace region, highlighting the need for flexible cropping alternatives.

Hurdle provides farmers with multi-option utility: if unseasonal weather ruins the grain potential, crops can seamlessly be diverted to livestock grazing or harvested for hay instead of resulting in total financial write-offs.

The new cultivar builds directly on the earlier Bale and Dual dual-purpose varieties released in 2021, integrating enhanced genetics that deliver superior grain size and higher overall yield capacity.

Developed in close collaboration with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), former Grower Group Alliance chair Peter Roberts, and LongReach Plant Breeders, the variety is named after Hurdle Creek where grower consultations first began.

Hurdle is scheduled to be demonstrated at a regional field walk in Western Australia ahead of its planned commercial rollout via LongReach Plant Breeders in the coming months.

African Development Bank Approves $5.1 Billion Response Framework to Counter Energy and Fertilizer Supply Shocks

The African Development Bank Group has approved the Global Energy and Fertilizer Crisis Response Framework (GEFCRF), mobilizing up to $5.1 billion to shield import-dependent African economies from soaring commodity prices and international shipping disruptions.

Approved on September 1, 2026, the financing package combines $4.1 billion in additional direct bank lending with up to $960 million from the concessional African Development Fund, lifting the group’s annual lending capacity to roughly $12.7 billion.

The intervention addresses the interconnected nexus of energy security, fertilizer pricing, and food production costs, targeting supply chain chokepoints exacerbated by geopolitical conflicts and rerouted maritime logistics.

Structured across four core pillars, the demand-driven initiative provides emergency trade finance to stabilize macroeconomic balances, protects essential public spending for vulnerable groups, and injects critical working capital into fertilizer distribution networks so farmers do not cut back on essential crop nutrients.

Beyond near-term relief, the one-year framework promotes policy reforms and investments in regional African fertilizer manufacturing to build lasting self-reliance against future global price spikes.

BASF Introduces Ampliqan Nitrification Inhibitor in China to Enhance Nitrogen Efficiency and Sustainable Farming

BASF Agricultural Solutions has launched Ampliqan®, an advanced nitrification inhibitor, for the Chinese fertilizer industry to advance climate-smart agriculture and optimize nutrient utilization.

Powered by the active ingredient DMPSA-K2, the formulation suppresses nitrifying soil bacteria to slow the breakdown of ammonium into nitrate, significantly curbing nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions.

Because crops typically absorb only about half of standard applied nitrogen, retaining nitrogen in the root zone ensures prolonged nutrient availability while improving crop yields, quality, and soil micronutrient uptake.

Designed as a flexible, plug-and-play solution, the ready-to-use liquid boasts stable storage across broad temperature ranges and integrates seamlessly with standard blending equipment across the supply chain. It is broadly compatible with major fertilizer types, including urea, MAP, DAP, NPK, ammonium nitrate, and liquid formulations.

Ultimately, the product enables fertilizer manufacturers to differentiate their offerings while providing Chinese growers with practical tools to elevate productivity and minimize environmental impacts like eutrophication and greenhouse gas emissions.

Ayana Bio and Zenfold Secure Meati Foods’ Fermentation Assets to Accelerate Plant Cell Scale-Up in India

Boston-based startup Ayana Bio and India’s Zenfold Sustainable Technologies have jointly acquired the core biomanufacturing assets of defunct alt-meat producer Meati Foods for just $75,000. Gravity Gardens Secures €2.6 Million to Scale Chemical-Free, Dry Seed Activation Technology Across European Crops

Nijmegen-based agtech startup Gravity Gardens has raised €2.6 million in Seed funding—combining equity from VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners, and Graduate Ventures with European Regional Development Fund (EFRO) backing—bringing its cumulative financing to over €3 million.

Founded in 2024 by Paulino Valdés and Robin Le Vigouroux, the company has engineered a chemical-free, completely dry seed activation process that eliminates the operational hurdles of conventional wet priming.

Traditional seed hydration and drying cycles carry high infrastructure costs and capacity bottlenecks that have historically confined priming solely to high-value horticulture and flowers, leaving broad-acre field crops excluded.

By removing water, synthetic additives, and seed coatings entirely, Gravity Gardens’ dry treatment dramatically reduces processing expenditures while enhancing foundational crop vigor and stand establishment under unpredictable field conditions.

The platform, developed with incubation support from the European Space Agency (ESA BIC) Noordwijk, has completed seven external trials with Dutch research institutes including Vertify.

Partnering with engineering firm Demcon to construct industrial-scale treatment machinery, the company will use the capital injection to expand field trials across multiple crop categories, targeting commercial market readiness by 2027.

BL Agro to Invest Rs 1,500 Crore in Leads Genetics to Build Integrated Dairy and Bovine Genomics Ecosystem

FMCG major BL Agro has announced a Rs 1,500 crore capital infusion into its biotechnology subsidiary, Leads Genetics, to establish an integrated dairy and reproductive-technology ecosystem aimed at elevating cattle productivity across India.

Unveiled during the Cattle Genomics Summit 2026 in Bareilly, the initiative will expand across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, housing dedicated Breed Improvement Farms, IVF-ET and MOET facilities, pathology units, and genomics laboratories under one roof.

The program targets India’s long-standing dairy productivity gap by replacing expensive imported germplasm with domestically produced elite bulls, sexed semen, and embryos, with a goal to produce 15,000 embryos monthly by the end of 2027.

Underpinned by an India-Brazil bilateral genetics framework, the facility introduced the first Zebu-optimized bovine SNP chip alongside Illumina NovaSeq X sequencing to select for milk yield, fertility, parasite resistance, and heat tolerance before conventional progeny testing.

Genetically upgraded indigenous breeds, such as elite Gir cows, are projected to achieve average yields of 40 to 60 liters per day while lowering lifecycle methane intensity per liter.

Ultimately, this farm-to-processing circular model seeks to reinforce national genetic self-reliance, substantially increase rural farm incomes, and build a globally competitive Indian dairy value chain.

India-US $500 Billion Trade Ambition Puts Domestic Soybean Productivity and Import Policy at a Strategic Crossroads

As India and the United States work toward a $500 billion bilateral trade target by 2030, the soybean sector has emerged as a crucial test case for balancing domestic farm viability against import openness.

Speaking on global oilseed dynamics, Kevin Roepke of the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) noted that while India’s expanding economy is accelerating consumer demand for protein, edible oils, and livestock feed, the nation struggles with the world’s second-lowest soybean yields.

Historically a net exporter, post-pandemic India has increasingly relied on imports to feed its expanding processing and consumption sectors, while global producers face escalating energy and fertilizer expenses alongside competing biofuel demand.

Although opening the market to U.S. soymeal could generate a lucrative arbitrage spread of roughly $250 per tonne, domestic stakeholders remain concerned about displacing local growers.

Citing China’s precedent of doubling domestic production while expanding imports, Roepke argued that strategic trade access does not have to cannibalize local farming if paired with structural investments in seed genetics, agronomic extension, and crushing capacity.

Rather than resorting to rigid protectionism or unregulated market inundation, India’s broader policy goal must focus on building an integrated, competitive agricultural ecosystem that incentivizes domestic farmer productivity while meeting rising national food, feed, and fuel requirements.

CSKHPKV and Savannah Seeds Study Proves Direct-Seeded Rice Slashes Methane Emissions by Nearly 90%

A multi-year research initiative conducted by Himachal Pradesh’s farm university, CSKHPKV Palampur, in collaboration with rice technology firm Savannah Seeds, demonstrates that direct-seeded SAVA-134 FullPage® significantly enhances the sustainability and resource efficiency of rice cultivation.

Led by Assistant Soil Chemist Dr. Dhanbir Singh across two major rice-growing regions, the study compared direct-seeded rice (DSR) against traditional transplanted flooded systems across parameters including yields, greenhouse gas footprints, water usage, and agronomic soil quality.

The findings revealed that SAVA-134 FullPage® reduced potent methane emissions by nearly 90% while achieving the highest water productivity among all evaluated direct-seeded treatments.

Beyond lowering input requirements and preserving yield potential, the cultivation system substantially upgraded critical soil indicators—elevating soil organic carbon, boosting microbial activity, improving water-holding capacity, and mitigating soil compaction.

By curbing reliance on intensive flooded nurseries and manual transplanting labor, the method provides an accessible, climate-smart operational framework that mitigates rural water scarcity and operational expenses while showing the highest potential for carbon credit generation.
